Glaucoma

Eye Physicians of Central Florida’s Jerry N. Shuster, M.D., is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who specializes in glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the sneak thief of sight because it usually produces no symptoms in its early stages. It is also one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Elevated intraocular pressure is the most common risk factor, but since 20 percent of patients with glaucoma have normal intraocular pressure, a thorough evaluation of the optic nerve through a comprehensive eye examination is the best preventive medicine. The goal for early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma is to lower eye pressure to prevent progressive damage and visual loss. This can be done using medicated eye drops, pills, laser surgery, eye surgery or a combination of these methods.

With 27 years of experience, Dr. Shuster offers patients the latest in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, including:
  • Glaucoma consultations/evaluations
  •  Automated optic nerve analysis
  •  Visual fields to identify glaucoma/detect progression
  •  Laser surgery for glaucoma
  •  Glaucoma surgery, including trabeculetomy and glaucoma drainage devices
