Pterygium and Pinguecula
A pterygium is wedge-shaped growth of fleshy tissue on the cornea (the clear front window of the eye). Pinguecula is a yellowish patch or bump on the conjunctiva, typically on the side closest to the nose. Both growths are believed to be caused by dry eye as well as outside factors such as wind, dust and ultraviolet light.
Symptoms include:
- Redness or inflammation
- Irritation
- Blurred vision
- Itching
- Dryness
- Burning
- A gritty feeling like you have something in your eye
Usually no treatment is needed. Eye drops and ointments can be used to alleviate inflammation. If a pterygium or pinguecula grows large enough, they can be removed surgically.
The best way to prevent these growths is to:
- Wear sunglasses
- Use proper eye wear for protection in dry, dusty conditions
- Apply artificial tears to your eyes in dry conditions
