Uveitis is a rare and sometimes chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the “uvea” or middle layer of the eye.; With uveitis, the body’s immune system attacks the eye. The disease is classified according to the location of the inflammation:
- Scleritis -- the “white” part of the eye, or sclera
- Iritis or iridocyclitis -- the front part of the eye
- Pars planitis or intermediate uveitis-- the middle part of the eye
- Posterior uveitis -- the back part of the eye
- Panuveitis -- the whole eye
Symptoms include redness, pain, light sensitivity and blurred vision. Treatments include the use of either steroids or other immunosuppressive drugs to help prevent loss of vision, retinal damage, cataracts, and glaucoma from developing.
